Smartphone Usage Statistics 2012

Although there are 5 billion phones in the world, one billion of them are smartphones, which have now become a worldwide phenomenon today and believe it or not, the US isn’t the country with the highest smartphone penetration but the sixth, after Singapore, Canada, Hong Kong, Sweden and Spain.

But who uses smartphones the most and what do they use them for?

Well,it seems that the group of people that use smartphones the most are those aged between 25 and 34, with 62% of penetration rate. Those aged 35 to 44 come next with 53%, followed by those aged from 18 to 24 with 54%. Age groups 45 to 54, older than 65, 55 to 64, and 13 to 17 come next with 39%, 38%, 30% and 18%.

Although the first thing that comes to mind when you think about smartphones is making phone calls or texting, those aren’t the most popular activities among smartphone users. In fact, none of them are in the top three favourite smartphone usage activities which is taken by apps, videos and games.

A popular data usage survey tells us that 79% of iPhone users prefer apps, 46% use it for videos and 26% use their phone for games. Android users have more or less the same tastes with 74% preferring apps, 43% preferring videos and 20% using their device for games.

Windows Phone users also prefer using apps to watching videos and playing games with 63% against 39% and 20%. Finally RIM phone owners are the ones who least use their device for apps with 42%, while 24% of them use them for videos and 11% to play games.
